MASSIVart is pleased to share its partnership with the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) in developing an art and placemaking strategy to create a captivating arts route in downtown Ottawa.

The multi-phased development to revitalize downtown Ottawa began in September 2023 that included site analysis, visioning workshop, and opportunity mapping. These initiatives have led to a strategic plan and the first phase of the OAG’s strategy to highlight artistic talent and connect cultural anchors in downtown Ottawa. The aim is to activate Downtown Ottawa year-round through placemaking and cultural programming.

The first phase of the Arts Corridor project will be marked by the unveiling of a large-scale mural by digital artist EEPMON. In collaboration with OAG and MASSIVart, EEPMON has transformed a nearby parking lot with his vibrant artwork Chaos Bloom—Tidal Wave.

“I believe the creative arts play a significant role in connecting with the public. This is evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive response to my digital art mural, Chaos Bloom – Tidal Wave, the largest artwork I have created to date. As such, public art inspires and empowers the very fabric of our communities.” – EEPMON, artist.

The development of the Arts Corridor is crucial for downtown Ottawa’s cultural institutions. It aims to transform the public realm into a vibrant, inclusive cultural hub. In the short term, this initiative seeks to enliven public spaces with diverse artistic expressions, from public art to theatre and music performances, creating a dynamic cultural atmosphere for all. Art will also be used for navigation and place branding, enhancing the area’s identity and visual connections between cultural landmarks. By supporting local talent, the corridor will provide platforms for artists to showcase their work and reach new audiences.

In the long term, the goal is to establish the corridor as a year-round destination filled with permanent and temporary cultural activities that engage residents and visitors. This will boost sustainable economic development by increasing visitor numbers to cultural sites and local businesses, encouraging more enterprises to set up in the area. Central to this vision is fostering a collaborative cultural ecosystem where institutions work together to enhance the downtown experience.

“EEPMON’s bold, large-scale mural is a proof of concept to inspire new thinking as to the role public art can play in downtown revitalization and how culture, government and businesses can work together to make this happen. Given our expertise in supporting visual arts in Ottawa and our experience with partnership development, OAG is excited to engage with various stakeholders to move the Arts Corridor project forward.” – Alexandra Badzak, Director and CEO, Ottawa Art Gallery.
