Cultivating Creativity, Awe, and Play with Northcrest Developments

As Toronto’s Downsview Airport undergoes a transformation into one of North America’s largest and most ambitious complete mixed-use communities over the coming decades, MASSIVart is proud to be one of Northcrest Developments’ strategic partners involved in the development of an Interim Programming & Site Plan. This plan aims to invite the community and visitors to experience the airport site before full redevelopment takes place.

Cultivating Creativity, Awe, and Play

MASSIVart is masterplanning and designing a “pop-up” public space for interim activation featuring a variety of flexible design elements. These include pop-up structures, rest and play features, as well as strategic wayfinding and signage.

Committed to inclusivity and the creation of an authentic sense of belonging, Northcrest Developments and MASSIVart have been consulting with local community organizations and Indigenous rights-holders. This ensures that the resulting “pop-up” public place is welcoming and accessible to individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

As an important first step of Northcrest’s multi-phased redevelopment initiative, MASSIVart’s contribution to Northcrest’s Interim Site and Programming Plan aims to create a vibrant and enjoyable environment that invites the surrounding community to physically experience and discover Northcrest’s vision. This mandate also presents an opportunity for MASSIVart to play a role in shaping Toronto’s future, further establishing the city as a model for inclusive placemaking and placekeeping.
