FREL - The Summit Santa Fe

Fragments by Alexandre Berthiaume of Futil Inc. is one of the two major art pieces that MASSIVart has selected and produced for real estate developer FREL’s brand new office complex The Summit Santa Fe in Mexico City. We invite you to discover what is behind this massive work of art.
To begin the project, MASSIVart proposed the concept of a mountain’s abstraction as the building was built in a zone surrounded by several mountains (Santa Fe). We invited Canadian artist and designer Alexandre Berthiaume of Futil Inc. to bring this vision to life. This three-dimensional wall piece is meant to inspire viewers to strive for greatness.
MASSIVart supervised the production of the 450sqm art installation composed of 67 cells, 428 triangulations, 622 mirrored surfaces, 1.5km of square tubing for the backing structure and 1,866 pieces that had to be measured and quoted to be custom made.
As for inspiration, Alexandre Berthiaume relied on the studies of Voronoi Tessellation, which is a type of geometric fragmentation found often in nature. This allowed him to create a cell system that is then blown up in volume by triangular facets. The natural light of the sun and the complimentary artificial lighting complement each other to create a vibrant and dynamic presence. The mirror finish amplifies the luminous interactions, reflecting its environment in an unexpected and abstract way. People can also interact with the creation by seeing their reflection in the artwork.
The connection with the city is represented in the artwork’s resemblance to the north face of Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City. The other link is the district of Santa Fe and the futuristic vision of the area – a modern vision where skyscrapers are intertwined with captivating contemporary parks. The artwork’s blend of nature and technology is a perfect fit.
